city, Rock Island county, northwestern Illinois, U.S., on the Mississippi River. With Moline, Rock Island, and Davenport (qq.v.), Iowa, it forms an industrial complex known as the Quad Cities. Originally called Port Byron Junction, it was settled in 1895 and developed as a centre of manufacture of farm implements. There are large railway repair shops at Silvis, immediately to the east. East Moline State Hospital was established in the former village of Watertown (later annexed to East Moline). At Campbell's Island State Memorial an obelisk marks the site of a battle (1814) during the War of 1812 between troops led by Lieutenant John Campbell and Indians under Chief Black Hawk. Inc. 1907. Pop. (1992 est.) 20,500.
