public, coeducational institution of higher learning in Johnson City, Tenn., U.S. It is part of the State University and Community College System of Tennessee. The university includes the colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Public and Allied Health, Nursing, and Applied Science and Technology, and the James H. Quillen College of Medicine. It offers both undergraduate and graduate degree programs. There is a branch campus in Kingsport. Total enrollment is about 12,000. The university was chartered by the General Assembly of Tennessee in 1909. It opened two years later as East Tennessee State Normal School. The name was changed several times to reflect the school's evolving status and mission. In 1963, it became East Tennessee State University. With cooperation from the U.S. Veterans Administration, the university opened a medical college in 1974.
