triangular-shaped shallow body of water between the Gulf of Mexico and Biscayne Bay at the southern end of Florida, U.S. The bay is partially sheltered from the Atlantic Ocean on the south and east by the Florida Keys. Its depth is generally less than 11 feet (3 m), and many of the mudbanks are high enough to form small islands. Navigation channels have been dredged through the bay to accommodate the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. Most of the bay is included within the Everglades National Park.
