private, coeducational institution of higher learning in Spokane, Wash., U.S. It is affiliated with the Jesuit order of the Roman Catholic church. The university includes the College of Arts and Sciences and schools of Business Administration, Education, Engineering, Professional Studies, and Law. It also includes St. Michael's Institute, a centre for Jesuit scholastics and training. In addition to undergraduate studies, Gonzaga offers a range of master's degree programs, a doctoral program in education, and professional degrees in law and pastoral ministry. Facilities include the Computer Aided Design Center and the Foley Information and Technology Center. Total enrollment is approximately 5,000. The university, named for St. Aloysius Gonzaga, was founded in 1887. It was then known as Gonzaga College. It became a university in 1912, when the law school was added. The business school opened in 1921, and the education school in 1928. The School of Engineering opened in 1940.
