group of languages spoken primarily in Laos in areas scattered around Luang Prabang and extending into parts of Thailand and northern Vietnam. The Khmuic languages form a branch of the Mon-Khmer family, itself a part of the Austroasiatic stock. Khmu is the most prominent of the languages, with about 100,000 speakers on both sides of the Laos-Thailand border. Other Khmuic languages include Khang, Phong, Puoc, Thai Hat, Thin, and Yumbri.
