MARSHALL FIELD & CO.

Meaning of MARSHALL FIELD & CO. in English

a department store on State Street in Chicago that was for a time the largest in the world. In its 73 acres of floor space the store had larger book, china, shoe, and toy departments than any other department store. The store was founded by Marshall Field (18341906) and Levi Zeigler Leiter (18341904) in 1865. After buying out his partner (1881), Field introduced many merchandising concepts that were revolutionary at the time. Placing strong emphasis on total customer service, Field made his store a complete shopping world, providing virtually every product and service routinely needed, and many not so routine. This was the first store to have a restaurant for shoppers. Marshall Field department stores are located in many American cities, as well as in other shopping centres in the Chicago area. In 1982 Marshall Field & Co. was acquired by BATUS Inc., an American subsidiary of London-based B.A.T Industries PLC. The Dayton Hudson Corporation purchased Marshall Field & Co. from BATUS in 1990.
