born Sept. 8, 1873, Huntsville, Utah, U.S. died Jan. 18, 1970, Salt Lake City, Utah U.S. religious leader, ninth president (195170) of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons). He served as a missionary in Scotland (189799) and then returned to Utah to become instructor and principal (18991908) of the Weber State Academy, now Weber State College. In 1906 he was elected a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, and in 1950 he was chosen as its president. During his 19 years as president of the church, relations between Mormons and non-Mormons improved greatly, and the church experienced extensive growth in membership.
