city, Stark county, immediately north of Canton, east-central Ohio, U.S. It was laid out in 1831, and, since most of its residents were of predominantly German ancestry, it was called New Berlin. The Hoover tannery (forerunner of the electrical-appliance company, now the city's largest industry) was established there in 1873. William H. Hoover became the first mayor when the village was incorporated in 1905. In 1918, because of anti-German sentiment, New Berlin was renamed North Canton. In 1961 the community achieved city status. Pop. (1990) 14,904; (1994 est.) 15,357.
