Formerly known as Crrego do Veado, the settlement was given status as a town in 1921 and as a municipality in 1923. The local economy is based largely on the processing of agricultural products, chiefly cotton, coffee, corn (maize), rice, and feijo (beans). Lumbering and furniture making are additional activities. The city is linked by rail and road to cities in southern So Paulo state and indirectly to Trs Lagoas in Mato Grosso do Sul state. It is also accessible by air. Pop.
