SAN ISIDRO

cabecera (county seat) and partido (county) of Gran (Greater) Buenos Aires, Arg. It lies north of the city of Buenos Aires, in Buenos Aires provincia, on the Ro de la Plata estuary. Colonization of the area began with the second and permanent founding of Buenos Aires (1580). During this period the region was known as Costa de Monte Grande. A settlement grew around the chapel of San Isidro Labrador, which was built by Domingo Acassuso in 1706. In 1784 the partido was established, coinciding with the area of the parish; and later, in 1816, the partido and settlement were both named in honour of San Isidro Labrador. The partido covers 19 square miles (48 square km) and is bordered by the Ro de la Plata (northeast) and the partidos of Vicente Lpez (southeast), General San Martn (southwest), and San Fernando (northwest). Besides the cabecera of San Isidro, the major localities in the partido are Boulogne, Beccar, Martnez, and Acassuso. Industries in the partido freeze meat and produce dairy products, tires, paper, ceramics, and other items. The city is known as a resort for golfing, yachting, swimming, and fishing. Many colonial structures still stand among the modern residences and other buildings of the city. A modern turf racetrack attracts many residents and tourists. With the growth of the national capital, San Isidro has been absorbed into the north-northwestern suburban area of Gran Buenos Aires. The partido is totally within the Gran Buenos Aires urban area, and its population density is greater than the majority of the partidos. Three railway lines and the national highway system serve the partido. Pop. (1980) partido, 289,170. quarter and distrito (district) of southern LimaCallao metropolitan area, Peru, and one of Lima's most elegant suburbs, with large homes set in lush gardens. The area is dotted with numerous parks, the largest of which is the Bosque El Olivar (olive grove). Nearby is the private Universidad Inca Garcilaso de la Vega (1964). San Isidro is also the location of the Women's University of the Sacred Heart (1962). In the western sector are the Lima Golf Club; the small pre-Inca ruin of Huallamarca, the artifacts of which are displayed in an adjoining museum; and many luxurious high-rise apartment buildings. In the eastern sector, a residential area has been founded on the grounds of the former Limatambo airport and the Ministry of Government and Police has moved into the old terminal. San Isidro has no central business district; retail and service establishments are scattered throughout the district, and there are several large shopping centres. Pop.
