It is a commercial centre for an agricultural region that raises corn (maize), feijo (beans), sugarcane, cassava, and rice, as well as livestock. Manufacturing and dairy and food-processing plants are in the city, which is on the Rio de JaneiroBraslia highway and is easily accessible from Belo Horizonte, the state capital, to the southeast.
