town, Piotrkw wojewdztwo (province), central Poland, on the Pilica River. A major textile centre, the town contains Poland's largest synthetic-silk factories as well as carpet factories and leatherworks. A national bison preserve is located in nearby Spalska forest. The town has good road and rail connections to Warsaw and Ldz. Founded in the late 18th century, the town received municipal rights in 1830. The weaving industry was the primary economic staple after the early 1800s, with textile plants appearing as synthetic processes were developed. Pop. (1991 est.) 69,900.
