TOWER OF LONDON

Meaning of TOWER OF LONDON in English

The construction and curiosities of the Tower of London are treated in part 46 of the article London in the 3rd edition (178897) of Encyclopdia Britannica. The article is unsigned, but, in the mold of 18th-century publishing, it borrows heavily from the writing of the naturalist and urban observer Thomas Pennant, who is cited throughout as our author, this naturalist, and Mr Pennant. He wrote Some Account of London, which was first printed in 1790; a posthumous collection of his works, Antiquities of London, was published in 1814. The following text is presented in modern typography for ease in reading but otherwise retains the original punctuation, capitalization, italics, and spellingincluding typographical errors. Notice the exceptional extent of the footnote, which consists of a tour beginning with the wild beasts and ending at the sedate Tower archives.
