public, coeducational institution of higher learning in Bowling Green, Ky., U.S. It comprises four colleges: Potter College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences; Bowling Green College of Business Administration; the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences; and Ogden College of Science, Technology, and Health. The university offers both undergraduate and master's degree programs. In addition to the main campus, there is a branch campus in Glasgow, Ky. Research facilities include the Center for Local Government Services, the Social Science Research Laboratory, and the Center for Industry and Technology. Total enrollment is approximately 16,000. Western Kentucky was established in 1906. Classes began on the campus of its precursor, the Southern Normal School of Bowling Green. In 1911 the university moved to a location atop a hill overlooking Bowling Green. Western Kentucky had merged with Potter College for Young Women in 1909; in 1928 it leased Ogden College, which then became Western Kentucky's Ogden Department of Science. The school was made a four-year teachers college in 1922. Bowling Green College of Commerce was added in 1963. Three years later Western Kentucky was elevated to university standing.
