( in the American West ) a route along which cows were driven to eastern markets in the late 19th century. It was also called ‘the long drive’. About 2 million cattle went along the Trail, from south Texas to Abilene, Kansas , where they were put on trains to Chicago . It was named after Jesse Chisholm (1806–68), a scout (= a person who goes ahead to check the route and look for dangers).
