a humorous novel (1932) by the English author Stella Gibbons (1902–89), about a lonely farm and the strange people who live there. It is a parody (= a work that copies the style of sth in order to be amusing) of the ‘earthy’ novels influenced by Hardy and Lawrence that had been fashionable in the 1920s.
