a phrase used to refer to the areas of north-east France and Belgium where many soldiers died and were buried in World War I . The phrase comes from a poem, In Flanders Fields (1915) by John McCrae, which contains the lines:

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place.
