one of the world’s largest public trusts (= organizations providing money for projects that help society). It was established in the US in 1936 by Henry Ford and his son Edsel Ford for the state of Michigan , and in 1950 it became a national and international organization. By 1997, it had given or lent over $8 billion, especially to projects for democracy, world peace and justice, education and the arts, science and communication. The Foundation also helped to establish the US Public Broadcasting Service .
