Meaning of GRANT in English

I . Cary Grant

(1904–86)

a US film actor, born in England. He was known for his easy charm in romantic and comedy parts. His films included The Philadelphia Story (1940), To Catch a Thief (1955), Indiscreet (1958) and North by Northwest (1959). He received a special Oscar in 1969.

II . Hugh Grant

(1960– )

an English actor who is known for playing typically English men in romantic comedy films. His films include Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), Notting Hill (1999), Bridget Jones’ Diary (2001) and Love Actually (2003).

III . Ulysses S Grant

( Ulysses Simpson Grant 1822–85)

the general who commanded the US Army during the Civil War and later became the 18th President of the US (1869–77). His greatest Civil War victory was at Vicksburg , Mississippi , and he accepted the surrender of Robert E Lee at Appomattox Court House . Grant was a Republican . He was not a successful president because he failed to stop the illegal actions of friends he appointed. His two volumes of Personal Memoirs (1885–6) are among the best military books ever written.
