a large shallow lake in the US state of Utah whose water is more salty than sea water. It is the largest salt lake in North America, about 72 miles/116 kilometres long and 30 miles/48 kilometres wide. Industry takes salt and other minerals from it. Five miles south-east of the lake is Salt Lake City . To the west is the Great Salt Lake Desert with the Bonneville Salt Flats where drivers have established the highest speeds on land.
