Meaning of GREEN PARTY in English

1. a British political party that aims to protect the environment. It is against the use of nuclear power and other forms of industry and transport that it considers harmful. It was formed in 1973 as the Ecology Party, and changed its name to the Green Party in 1985. In 2004 the party has two MEPs , two members of the London Assembly , seven MSPs and 61 councillors, but no MPs in the House of Commons .

2. ( also the Green Party of the United States ) a US political party formed in 1996 as the Association of State Green Parties. It changed its name to the Green Party of the United States in 2001. It aims to protect the environment and supports social justice. The party has a number of elected representatives across the US at all levels of politics. One of its best-known supporters is Ralph Nader .
