an important US Supreme Court case in 1803 which established its right to decide if a new law is illegal under the American Constitution . William Marbury had taken Secretary of State James Madison to court because he refused to keep an agreement that Marbury would become a judge. The court decided that Marbury was right, and established the principal of judicial review .
