The first shops were started by Michael Marks and Thomas Spencer in the late 19th century, and there are now shops in most British towns. Marks and Spencer’s is famous for its well made clothes at fairly low prices, and is traditionally the place where many people go to buy items such as underwear and socks rather than the latest fashions. The company is also known informally as Marks and Sparks or simply Marks :
