a US Navy victory on 5 August 1864 during the Civil War . The US sent 18 ships against 4 ships of the Confederate Navy in Mobile Bay at Mobile, Alabama . The bay was also protected by three forts and by containers filled with explosive (called ‘torpedoes’) that floated in the water. Admiral David Farragut led the successful US attack with the famous remark: ‘Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!’.
