a well-known British charity, formed in 1824, which aims to make sure that the laws about protecting animals are being followed. It also tries to get new laws introduced and gives medical care to animals that need it. In the past it has helped to end many forms of cruel treatment, and one of its present concerns is to improve the conditions for the transport of live farm animals.
