a US actor and stage director, born in Austria. He directed the Actors’ Studio in New York City from 1948 to 1982 and is remembered for training actors in method acting . His many students included Marlon Brando , James Dean , Marilyn Monroe , Al Pacino , Robert De Niro , Dustin Hoffman , Jack Nicholson and Jane Fonda .
