n
( in Britain ) the most senior official in a university. The vice chancellor of a British university is responsible for its administration, in contrast to the chancellor, who is given the title as an honour and has only a few formal duties, such as attending ceremonies, etc. In the US, a vice chancellor is the assistant to the chancellor, who is the senior university official, with the most responsibility and power. Many US universities, however, use the titles ‘president’ and ‘vice-president’ instead of ‘chancellor’ and ‘vice chancellor’.
