Nevada's apportionment of Colorado River water is a consumptive use apportionment. Nevada can divert more than its apportionment, however, so long as it returns sufficient Colorado River water to the river such that its net depletion is no greater than the 300,000 acre-feet per year currently allowed. The calculated Colorado River water returned each year is known as "return flow credits". Also see Colorado River Compact.
