The complete or partial kill of fish and other animals in a body of water, usually occurring during prolonged periods of ice and snow cover. The kill can be attributed to a number of circumstances including diminished dissolved oxygen due to a lack of photosynthesis; the depletion of dissolved oxygen by decomposing organic matter; the production of harmful chemicals (e.g., ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, and ethanes) resulting from anaerobic decomposition; and the harmful influence of insecticides and herbicides.
