an organization of South African women that was started in 1955 to protest against ↑ apartheid (=the system in which black people had few political rights, and black and white people had to live in different areas) . The organization was started by white women and they used to wear black ↑ sash es . The Black Sash still exists as a women's NON-RACIAL ↑ humanitarian organization.
