a novel written by Charles Dickens in 1852–53. It is the story of members of the Jarndyce family who fight each other in a court of law about money and property that belongs to the family. The legal system is so complicated that the case lasts for a long time, and they have to pay their lawyers so much money that in the end none of them gets anything.
