an unsuccessful attack made by the British ↑ cavalry (=soldiers riding horses) during the Crimean War. Many British soldiers were killed because they were ordered to ride into a valley full of Russian soldiers with heavy guns. Tennyson describes this battle in his poem The Charge of the Light Brigade .
