(1917–67) a US writer whose best-known novels include The Heart is a Lonely Hunter and Reflections in a Golden Eye , both of which have been made into films. Her best-known short stories are included in the collection The Ballad of the Sad Café . She often wrote about loneliness, and many of her characters are people who do not fit into ordinary society.
