WATER CLOVER

a common freshwater fern, Marsilea quadrifolia, of lake edges and quiet ponds, having roots embedded in the bottom, very slender and often tangled stems, and floating, cloverlike leaves composed of four leaflets. Also called pepperwort, water shamrock .
