He studied with Thomas Cole in Catskill, N.Y., and soon became one of the most prominent members of the Hudson River school . He traveled widely, seeking out spectacular scenery and marvels of nature such as Niagara Falls, volcanoes, icebergs, and the tropical forests of South America, and he achieved fame and success at home and in Europe. His house, Olana, on the Hudson River, is now a museum.
