Park, southeastern Kenya, east of Mount Kilimanjaro .
Established in 1948, it covers 8,036 sq mi (20,812 sq km) and is Kenya's largest national park. It comprises semiarid plains covered by dormant vegetation (which blooms after a light rain) and acacia and baobab trees. Wildlife includes elephants, lions, rhinoceroses, hippopotamuses, hartebeests, and hundreds of bird species. Poaching and brush fires are constant problems.
