It extends south from Van Diemen Gulf to the Gulf of Australian Aboriginal s since the late {{link=Pleistocene Epoch">Pleistocene , it was visited in 1623 by the Dutch explorer Jan Carstensz, who named it for his ship. The name now primarily refers to its large Aboriginal reserve.
