It meanders south then flows southeast to join the Zambezi River near Chirundu, Zimbabwe, after a course of 600 mi (960 km). It cuts through the plateau of central Zambia, and its basin contains the Kafue National Park . It is one of Zambia's major rivers, and its waters are used for irrigation and hydroelectric power.
