Welsh-born U.S. actor.

He made his film debut in 1929 and moved to Hollywood in 1930. The debonair romantic leading man in many movies of the 1930s and '40s, he won acclaim for his performance as an alcoholic writer in The Lost Weekend (1945, Academy Award) and also played dramatic parts in The Big Clock (1948), Something to Live For (1952), and Dial M for Murder (1954). In his later years, he generally only played minor roles. He also directed several movies in the 1950s and early '60s.
