River, central U.S. The longest tributary of the Mississippi River , it rises in the Rocky Mountains of southwestern Montana.

It flows east to central North Dakota and south across South Dakota, forming sections of the South Dakota–Nebraska boundary, the Nebraska-Iowa boundary, the Nebraska-Missouri boundary, and the Kansas-Missouri boundary. It then meanders east across central Missouri to join the Mississippi River north of Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet in 1673. The first exploration of the river from its mouth to its headwaters was made in 1804–05 by the {{link=Lewis and Clark Expedition">Lewis and Clark Expedition . Since the mid 20th century, programs have been instituted along its banks to check its turbulent flooding and to harness it for irrigation.
