Founded by a German bibliographer, Johann Samuel Ersch, who began work on it in 1813, the Allgemeine Enzyklopdie der Wissenschaften und Knste is noteworthy for containing the longest known encyclopaedia articlethe article about Greece, covering 3,668 pages in volumes 8087. The signed articles of the work were written by leading German scholars of the 19th century.
