ANNE, LADY

widow of Edward, prince of Wales and son to King Henry VI; afterward wife of King Richard III in Shakespeare's Richard III. Anne is chief mourner at Henry VI's funeral when she is wooed and won by the passion and poeticbrilliance of Richard, whom she had moments earlier cursed as the murderer of both her husband and her father-in-law. Later, Anne's recounting of her unhappy marriage and of her husband's fitful dreams gives a rare glimpse of Richard's private torment.
