national lakeshore in northwestern Wisconsin, U.S., at the southwestern end of Lake Superior. Established in 1970, it consists of 21 islands and a 12-mile (19-kilometre) strip of the adjacent Bayfield Peninsula, covering a total area of 108 square miles (281 square km). The islands are noted for high cliffs of sandstone, most from 10 to 30 feet (3 to 9 m) in height but reaching extremes of 60 feet (18 m), with many wave-formed arches and caverns.
