born Aug. 24, 1899, Buenos Aires, Arg. died June 14, 1986, Geneva, Switz. Argentine poet, essayist, and short-story writer whose works have become classics of 20th-century world literature. Ronald Christ, The Narrow Act: Borges' Art of Allusion (1969), perceptively analyzes one of Borges' key methods of creation. Martin S. Stabb, Jorge Luis Borges (1970), presents a superficial overview. Emir Rodrguez-Monegal, Jorge Luis Borges: A Literary Biography (1978), embraces the life, work, and criticism on Borges and contains a selective bibliography. Gene H. Bell-Villada, Borges and His Fiction: A Guide to His Mind and Art (1981), is also useful.
