CHAMBESHI RIVER

also spelled Chambezi, river in northeastern Zambia. It rises in hills on the Tanzanian border and flows 300 miles (480 km) southwest to the Lake Bangweulu swamps. The swamps act as a check to the annual flooding, releasing the flood waters slowly through a myriad of channels and lagoons, to issue as the Luapula River where the slope increases once more.
