COMPLETE PEERAGE, THE

Meaning of COMPLETE PEERAGE, THE in English

also called A History Of The House Of Lords And All Its Members From The Earliest Times, exhaustive 13-volume (in 14 volumes) guide to the British peerage, considered the greatest British achievement in the field of genealogy. The first edition was published in London (188798) by George Edward Cokayne, Clarenceux King of Arms. The second edition, revised and much enlarged, was issued from 1910 to 1959 and covers, as indicated by its subtitle, the peerage extant, extinct, and dormant of England, Scotland, Ireland, Great Britain, and the United Kingdom. Biographical details are complete regarding parentage, birth, awards and honours, marriage, politics and public service, death, and burial, and entries include meticulous bibliographical citations. Although lines of succession are also given, ancestry and collaterals usually are not.
