EAST KILBRIDE

district, Strathclyde region, southwestern Scotland, created by reorganization in 1975 from part of the former county of Lanark. The district includes farmland in the south devoted mainly to dairy cattle and centres on the planned new town of East Kilbride, designated in 1947 to house and provide industrial employment for overflow population from Glasgow. Area 110 square miles (285 square km). Pop. (1993 est.) 85,360. burgh (town), South Lanarkshire council area, historic county of Lanarkshire, Scotland. It was Scotland's first post-World War II planned new town, built around the old pastoral village of East Kilbride to accommodate residential and commercial growth from nearby Glasgow. The name suggests early Celtic association with St. Bride (Brigit). Industries include food processing, light engineering, and the manufacture of a variety of consumer goods. The National Engineering Laboratory is located there. Pop. (1991) 70,422.
