national park in the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California, U.S. It lies adjacent to Sequoia National Park and under the same administration. Established in 1940, it assimilated General Grant National Park, now General Grant Grove, a detached section to the southwest. Like Sequoia and Yosemite national parks, it contains groves of giant sequoia (redwood) trees. The park's most spectacular feature is Kings Canyon on the Kings River, carved by glacial action. Kings Canyon National Park (area 722 square miles [1,870 square km]) has many trails and lakes with good fishing. Deer, bears, bighorn sheep, and other wildlife inhabit the area.
