Uzbek Norin river in Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan that is fed by the glaciers and snows of the central Tien Shan (mountains). It becomes the Syr Darya (river) after merging with the Karadarya in the Fergana Valley. The Naryn River flows westward for 430 miles (700 km), receiving many tributaries and draining an area of 22,540 square miles (58,370 square km). High water occurs in May. The reservoirs of the Toktogul and Uchqurghon hydroelectric stations help regulate the Naryn's flow and increase irrigation in the area.
