A strike at a manufacturing plant in 1937 led to a major U.S. Supreme Court ruling in 1939 (National Labor Relations Board v. Fansteel Metallurgical Company) declaring sit-down strikes illegal. The city is a centre of heavy industry and of pharmaceutical production. The Great Lakes Naval Training Station and a Veterans Administration Hospital are to the south. Pop. (1990) 34,978.
